  • I was fascinated hearing about the La Brea Tar pits when I was a kid.  Millions of fossils have been excavated revealing the desperate end of many  pre-historic large mammals that roamed North America.
  • I wasn't that inspired by the place when I got there, but started taking photos of reflections and oil slicks.
  • I found I was more interested in making things abstract.
  • I started focusing just on the oil slicks – I’m a sucker for easy abstract images. I made several compositions.
  • When I got home I noticed the patterns have a latent 3-D quality that I wanted to explore.
